Secure Your Devices
Secure your computer and other mobile devices
Taking steps to secure your computer not only helps keep your data safe, it demonstrates your commitment to protecting the university network and data stored and shared over that network.
Take these steps to improve the overall security of your computer.
- Set a strong password
- Keep software updated
- Install and run up-to-date anti-virus software
- Enable a firewall
- Lock screen automatically
- Use a less privileged account
Risk of data exposure or password compromise increases when you use Duke services, or work with university data, from off campus.
Special precautions for mobile devices
While smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices cannot be secured in the same way as your desktop or laptop computer, you should still take some precautions.
If you are in a Duke department or school with technical support staff, always consult them about the preferred practices in your area.
