Action Required: Transition Your StrongFiles Data Before Oct. 14

You are receiving this email because you have been identified as a current user of Duke StrongFiles, formerly named StrongBox. Duke StrongFiles is being updated, and, as part of the update, existing StrongFiles data you wish to retain will need to be moved.

What is changing?

Duke created StrongFiles as a secure way to collect files containing sensitive information but now Box has evolved to include similar features, such as Box File Request, which also collects files. Files containing sensitive information (government-issued identifiers, such as Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, or passport numbers) can be stored in a StrongFiles folder in Duke Kits within Box.

Using Duke Kits

Duke Kits is a group access management tool within Box that provides shared ownership for teams, courses and communities. Kits allows faculty, students and staff to manage access to multiple Duke services, including Canvas, Sites@Duke, Sympa, Warpwire, DukeWiki, and Box. With shared ownership, group work can continue even when people change roles or leave Duke.

Users who collect sensitive information with government-issued identifiers can create a StrongFiles folder in Duke Kits. 

What do I need to do?

StrongFiles users must move data they wish to retain to Box before Oct. 14, 2026. Your StrongFiles data will not be moved automatically.

Review your data and determine whether you should: 

• Delete your data because it is no longer needed, by Oct. 14;
• Move it to a Box folder created through Kits because it does not contain sensitive information; or
• Move it to a StrongFiles Kit in Duke Kits within Box because it contains government-issued identifiers (see above). In order to do this, you must request a StrongFiles Kit. Once your new StrongFiles Kit is available, you can move your data to the kit.

After Oct. 14, data will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
