Duke Security Offices position statement on scheduled and timely reboots of Duke-owned systems

To support both security and user experience, the IT Security Office recommends that all endpoints be rebooted (restarted) at least every 7 days. Rebooting ensures the completion of pending updates, improves system responsiveness, and reduces the likelihood of support incidents related to memory, slowness, or application errors.

To assist with this practice, managed endpoint tools may notify users when their device’s uptime exceeds recommended guidelines. These prompts help maintain patch compliance and reduce the risk of unprotected or unstable systems in accordance with the Vulnerability Management Procedure and Minimum Security Standards: Laptops & Desktops.

IT Security Office position statements outline the ITSO's view on security-related topics and provide guidance concerning university standards.
